Angela has been writing continuously
since she was 14 years old. Not all her work,
however, has been published. Four of her books
are in the process of searching for a home.
St. Teresa Mystic as Mentor
(2002) is Angela’s first foray
into non-fiction. This work is a book of Buddhist
spiritual ruminations and meditations inspired
by the 16th Century Spanish Saint and mystic,
St. Teresa of Avila. It is a motivating book for
those who are hungry and searching for an interfaith
perspective to topics such as faith, devotion,
obedience, trust, and love. This was written initially
as part of her Masters Project.
Because of Baba (1995)
was written by Angela in the mid-nineties and
again is innovative in form. The work chronicles
the main character, Katya’s Ukrainian-Canadian
heritage and upbringing and the influence of her
grandmother, baba had on her life. This
is juxtaposed with the main character’s
attempts to reconcile her Ukrainian identity with
the Anglo neighborhood and social codes that envelop
her.
In 1985 Angela Hryniuk received a Canada Council
grant to write Beneath the Underground,
her first novel. Told in journal entries, poetry,
prose, maps, letters, this is a collage in form
about a 16 year-olds journey to the United Kingdom
to be with a lover 12 years her senior. The story
is an adventure of a lost adolescent searching
for love, acceptance and approval…in all
the wrong places.
